Loves:

Exploring the great outdoors, boating, camping, fishing, 4×4 adventures & tinkering with a range of mechanical equipment.

Background & Experience

Josip’s interest in 4×4 vehicles, motorbikes and, uniquely, Nitro RC cars early on kindled his passion for mechanical systems.

From there, and with a good performance at school, Jos entered university at ECU, where he studied Mechanical Engineering with a motorsport focus.

“I was pretty good at school, although Uni could be painful at times,” he laughed.

“There was a lot that I liked about it and a few things that I didn’t.”

Jos managed to keep up his hands-on work during and after Uni, ensuring that his practical skills stayed sharp.

“I worked in construction as a steel fixer, and with my old man concreting up north while I was at Uni, he said.

“After I got my degree, I worked with Jake (Konsolis) at Schneider Electric while I was looking around for other job opportunities as a Mechanical Engineer.”

“When I met Dane and Steve a couple of years ago, I initially thought, alright, this is pretty casual; I don’t think I’ll need to suit up for this one!”

“And during my interview, I think it was my practical skills that actually helped me out, and the fact that I could go onsite and do the work as well as use Solidworks–CAD and things like that.”

So, What Makes RS A Good Workplace?

“Growing up, I wanted to be a pilot, and Oil & Gas was where I wanted to be, but turbines weren’t on the radar at any point, really,” Jos said.

“So, when I joined RS, they were new and interesting to me, and I had to do a lot of reading to learn about them at the beginning.”

Jos believes that being part of a small team where everyone gets heard is one of the most satisfying parts of working with RS, and he loves his role’s challenging and mixed nature.

“I believe there are two types of engineers, theoretical and practical, and I’ve definitely learned a lot of both over the years as we try to find different solutions to problems.”

“Being a hands-on, visual learner, and being part of a small team where you’re involved in everything, my role has progressed, and I’ve learned a lot of tricks assisting Dane (Balle), to the point where I’m now the lead onsite.”

What’s On the Horizon for You?

“I’m trying to improve here and assess any issues from within; I want to grow my specialised tech skills and work towards becoming a guru on a diverse range of brands and equipment across solar and gas turbines,” he said.

“Everything is getting looked at internally, and our software (RSWI) helps a lot. Oil & Gas is where I want to be, and while you need to assess your worth in the marketplace, the range of work with RS keeps it interesting.”
